प्याज थ्रिप्स का नियंत्रण (Control of Onion Thrips)

Description
Onion thrips are slender and small (1.0-1.2 mm long), adults are light yellow to light brown in colour, becoming darker in winter, with long
hairs. Almost all onion thrips are female, males are very rare if present, and larvae are similar to adults in size but wingless and yellow in
colour.
Prevalent during mid-summer, adult and nymph stages feed on plants by puncturing the leaf surface and sucking sap and causing silver spots on
leaves and in severe cases, leaves can wither and the entire plant can appear silvery, leading to premature ripening of the crop and reduced yields. In
onions, thrips can enter harvested bulbs and reproduce, reducing the marketability of the bulbs.

Control
Good crop hygiene is critical to reduce onion thrips populations through removing potential host plants around crops.
Crops should be regularly monitored for onion thrips and control measures should be implemented before numbers increase.
Onion thrips can quickly develop resistance to insecticides, so reliance on insecticides alone should be minimized.
Currently there are few insecticide control options for thrips in onions. Movento® is an effective option, including in resistant populations that
have developed to other compounds. Given Movento®’s systemic nature it is effective in controlling hidden thrips and is best applied at the juvenile
stages of onion thrips.
